Preface

THESE Retreat Addresses were given by Dr. King while he was still Canon of Christ Church and Regius Professor of Pastoral Theology at Oxford.

The Rev. R. T. West was at that time the much-loved Vicar of St. Mary Magdalen's, Paddington--in fact, he built the Church and began the work there. He was an intimate friend of Dr. King, who used often to preach for him and to help him in any way that he could.

Dr. King had a great admiration for his quiet, gentle, strong character, and always spoke of him with marked respect and affection.

The reports of these Addresses were made by one who attended the Retreats, and who felt that it would be a good thing if words which had been so helpful to herself and others, could be more widely circulated.
