EARLY in the morning will I cry unto Thee: Lord, hear my prayer.

Glory be to Thee, Lord God Almighty, glory be to Thee, for renewing Thy mercies to me every morning; glory be to Thee, for refreshing me this night with sleep, and from preserving me from the perils of darkness.

O do away, as the night, so my transgressions; scatter my sins as the morning cloud.

Lord, forgive whatever Thou hast seen amiss in me this night.--(Here, if you are conscious to yourself of any sin of thought or deed, committed in the night, confess it.) Father of mercies, wash me thoroughly from my wickedness, and cleanse me from my sin.

Let thy Holy Spirit so prevent, and accompany, and follow me this day, that I may believe in Thee, and love Thee, and keep thy commandments, and continue in thy fear all the day long.

Lord, make me chaste and temperate, humble and teachable, diligent in my studies, obedient to my superiors, and charitable to all men.

Lord, deliver me from sloth and idleness; from youthful lusts and evil company; from all dangers, spiritual and bodily; and give me grace to remember Thee, my Creator, in the days of my youth.

Bless, and defend, and save the President, and all orders of men among us, ecclesiastical or civil. Lord, give them all grace in their several stations, to to be instrumental to Thy glory, and the public good.

Together with them I commend to Thy Divine protection (my father and mother, my brothers and sisters,) all my friends and relatives; O Lord, vouchsafe us all those graces and blessings which Thou knowest to be most suitable for us.

Unto Thee, O my God, do I dedicate this day, and my whole life: O do Thou so prosper me in my duties, that I may every day grow more fit for Thy service.

Hear me, O Lord, and pardon my failings, for the merits of Thy son Jesus, in whose holy words I sum up all my wants.

LET my prayer, O Lord, be set forth in Thy sight as the incense, and let the lifting up of my hands be as an evening sacrifice.

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God, I, a miserable sinner, humbly acknowledge that I have offended Thee this day, in thought, word, and deed: particularly (here mention any sin of which you have been guilty,) Lord, for Thy mercies' sake, forgive me, cleanse me from my wickedness, and strengthen my weakness, that I may overcome all the temptations which daily surround me, and continue constant in my obedience.

Accept of my humblest praise and thanksgiving, O Lord, for all the goodness Thou hast this day showed me; for all the helps of preventing or restraining grace Thou hast vouchsafed me; for whatever I have done this day, which is in any measure acceptable to Thee; (for whatever progress I have made in my studies;) and for Thy preservation of me from all the miseries and danger to which we are every moment exposed.

Praise the Lord, O my soul, who saveth thy life from destruction, and crowneth thee with mercy and loving-kindness.

O heavenly Father, to Thy almighty protection I recommend myself, and all my relations, and all that belong to this place. O Thou who never slumberest nor sleepest, watch over us, and preserve us from all sin and danger.

Lord, let it be Thy good pleasure to refresh me this night with such seasonable rest, that I may rise in the morning more fit for Thy service. O pardon my failings, and hear my prayers, for the sake of my blessed Saviour, in whose holy words I sum up all my wants.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, I praise and bless Thee from the bottom of my heart, that of Thy infinite goodness Thou hast preserved me this night past, and hast protected me from the power of the devil, and kept me both in soul and body from all his devices and snares, and raised me from sleep, the image of death, not leaving me to be stifled in the darkness of my sins, but vouchsafing me a longer space to repent of them. Withdraw not, I humbly entreat Thee, the hand of Thy protection from me; but watch over me with the eyes of Thy mercy, and direct me in the way of Thy commandments. Endue me with those graces of Thy Holy Spirit, whereby I may pass this day, and the rest of my life, to the praise and glory of Thy name, the benefit of my neighbor, and the salvation of my sinful soul. Keep me, O Lord, from all sin: bridle and mortify my flesh, that I fall not into any transgressions, which may provoke Thy wrath against me.

And because I am not worthy, O Lord, that Thou shouldest hear me, a wretched, unworthy sinner; behold I set before Thee the merits of Thine only Son, who is the propitiation for our sins; for His righteousness' sake pardon the offences of Thy servant, and for Thy mercies' sake in Christ grant me those good things, of which I am by the strict rule of Thy justice most unworthy.

O Thou who fillest all things living with plenteousness, and feedest the young ravens that call upon Thee, be merciful unto me in the supply of those necessaries which I daily want: keep me in health and strength; give me food and raiment, and a competence sufficient to maintain me in that state of life, to which it hath pleased Thee to call me: and grant that I may lead a quiet life in all godly conversation; that, using Thy blessings worthily, I may pass this life with joy and comfort, till it pleases Thee to call me to a better.

Bless, O Lord, those whom Thou hast set over us both in Church and State, govern their hearts in Thy fear, and guide their understandings to do those things which will be acceptable to Thee, and to this Church and land; and confound and defeat our open and secret enemies. Comfort the comfortless and helpless; show the light of Thy truth to those who wander out of the right way; strengthen and assist with Thy grace those who have begun well, that they may persevere in goodness; to all my friends and kindred, (especially * * * ) give all Thy good blessings; keep us from all evil, and make us to continue in Thy service to our lives end; and, after the course of this miserable life is ended, bring us to Thine everlasting kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

O HEAVENLY and most merciful Father, I most humbly beseech Thee, for Thy Son's sake, Jesus Christ our Lord, have mercy upon me, and succour me in these terrible assaults and temptations of the devil; deliver my soul from all his power and craft; send me strength from above, that I may retain my integrity, may resist the enemy, and stand steadfast in the day of trial. Be Thou my strong rock, and castle of defence; that, being preserved through Thy grace and assistance, I may continue Thy faithful soldier and servant unto my life's end. Nourish all the seeds of grace that are sown in my heart, and make them fruitful unto every good word and work. Give me the increase of faith, hope, charity, and all other Christian graces: and that I may obtain that which Thou dost promise, make me ever to love that which Thou dost command; and this I beg through the merits, and for the sake, of Thy dear Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

I DO not presume to come to Thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in my own righteousness, but in Thy manifold and great mercies. I am not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under Thy Table. But Thou art the same Lord, whose property is always to have mercy: Grant me therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of Thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink His blood, that my sinful body may be made clean by His body, and my soul washed through His most precious blood, and that I may evermore dwell in Him, and He in me. Amen.

O MOST gracious God, who daily multipliest upon us Thy mercies, notwithstanding we every day renew our provocations; accept, I beseech. Thee, my most humble and hearty thanks for Thine unspeakable kindness to me Thine unworthy servant. Blessed be Thy goodness, which has this day supplied me with food and necessaries, and preserved me in health, the chief of all outward enjoyments; and hath prospered me in all my ways, and [9/10] hath raised up friends to be a comfort to me.--Adored by Thy love and patience, for the assistance of Thy Spirit in the duties of this day; and for not cutting me off in any act of those sins I have this day committed, particularly my . . . (here confession the particular sins you have been guilty of.)--Grant me an earnest and hearty sorrow for having offended so gracious a God, to whose free mercy and bounty I stand indebted for all I have, or hope to enjoy. Remember not against me my past iniquities, by whcih I have dishonoured my Christian profession; but mercifully forgive and heal me, and let Thy grace, and the blessed influences of Thy Holy Spirit, defend me against all temptations for the time to come.

Keep me under the defence and care of Thy good providence this night; make my sleep safe and refreshing; fit me for the great change, that it may not surprise me unawares; but that having led a holy life, I may be happy in death, and have comfort and a well-grounded hope in Thee.

Give all men grace to repent of all their sins, and to become Thy faithful servants. Let all Christians live up to the laws of that religion which they profess. Bless this country in which we live; save and defend Thy Church from schism and heresy; give to the rich and prosperous, temperance and charity; to the poor and needy, patience and content. Preserve my friends and relations in their souls and their bodies; forgive my enemies, and make them [10/11] kindly affected towards me. Hear these my prayers, O merciful Father, for the sake of Thy Son, our advocate and only Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

TO BE USED ON THE FRIDAY BEFORE RECEIVING
THE HOLY COMMUNION.

THE preparation necessary to the performance of this duty after an acceptable manner, consists, as our Catechism instructs us, in the following particulars:

1. Self examination;
2. True repentance for our former sins;
3. A steadfast purpose to lead a new life;
4. A lively faith in God's mercy, through Christ;
5. A thankful remembrance of Christ's death;
6. Charity with all men.

A Prayer before Self Examination

HEAR the voice of my humble petition, O Lord, when I cry unto Thee. Behold, Lord, now I am about to search into my own heart; but alas! my heart is deceitful and desperately wicked, who can know it? Thou, therefore, who searchest the heart, and triest the reins, discover to me all the evil and deceit of my own heart, that I may confess, bewail, and forsake them, and obtain mercy. O Lord, hear me; Lord, help rue; for the merits of Jesus my Saviour. Amen.

I ADJURE thee, O my soul, in the presence of the great Judge, who knows all the secrets of thine heart, I adjure thee, as thou wilt answer before God's judgment-seat at the last day, to tell me, what sins thou art guilty of, more immediately against God:

Art thou guilty of any infidelity, any distrust in, presumption on, or despair of God's mercy?

Hast thou been discontented with thy position in life? Hast thou been fretful in distress? Hast thou been unthankful for kindnesses received from God?

Hast thou feared man more than God? Hast thou followed thine own wishes, knowing them to be wrong?

Hast thou dishonoured God by blasphemous or irreligious thoughts and discourses, or tamely hearing others blaspheme?

Hast thou misspent the Lord's day? Hast thou been guilty of irreverent behaviour in God's house? Hast thou been irregular or inattentive in thy prayers? Hast thou honoured God with the body by kneeling and standing in His worship?

Hast thou come to the Holy Communion on all possible occasions? Hast thou come prepared?

Hast thou robbed God? (Mal. iii, 8.)

O my soul, what sins art thou guilty of, more especially against thy neighbour?

Hast thou been wanting in love, respect and obedience to thy parents? Hast thou failed in respect and obedience to thy master and mistress? To thy teacher?

Dost thou strive to be humble, teachable and submissive? Dost thou endeavor to "honour all men," especially those in authority?

Hast thou been sullen, passionate, or pettish? Hast thou insulted or ill-treated any one? Hast thou stirred up others to quarreling, or neglected to make peace when in thy power?

Hast thou forgiven all who have hurt thee?--Dost thou try to think well of them? Dost thou pray for them? Hast thou hurt the soul of thy brother by setting a bad example?

Hast thou in any instance spoken untruly of another? Hast thou taken pleasure in speaking of, or alluding to, the faults of others? Dost thou [13/14] ever think ill of others without a cause? Dost thou rejoice to hear ill reports of any one? Hast thou ever said anything ill-natured to, or of, any one, on account of his failings, infirmities, or misfortunes?

Hast thou taken anything that belonged to another? Hast thou defrauded any one, by selling at unfair prices, or neglecting thy work? If so, hast thou made amends for the wrong done? Hast thou defrauded the poor of the just portion of the goods God has given thee?

Dost thou desire anything that belongs to thy neighbor, so much asto dislike him because thou canst not get it?

O my soul, what sins art thou guilty of more immediately against thyself?

Art thou guilty of pride, either in clothes, or on account of thy riches, or good looks, or deeds?--Hast thou been too anxious for the praise of men?

Hast thou been guilty of violent anger?

Hast thou misspent thy time? Neglected to resist temptations?

Hast thou been guilty of intemperance in eating, drinking and sleeping, and lawful recreation?

Hast thou been guilty of idleness, uncleanness, or lust? Hast thou looked at dangerous pictures, or read wicked books? Hast thou indulged in amusements which might give rise to temptation?

Hast thou ever deceived any one? Dost thou ever say anything that people may think thee better than thou art?

¶ When you find yourself guilty of any of these sins, write it down, and say: "Lord, have mercy upon me, and forgive me this sin."

A Prayer after Examination.

O LORD God, I have now, by Thy assistance, considered my own evil ways: O Thou who only knowest the heart, and who only can change it, create in me such a broken and contrite heart as Thou hast promised not to despise, and so deep a sense of my own sin and misery, that my repentance may bear some proportion to my guilt. O my God, pardon all my failings and perfect that good work Thou hast begun in me, for the merits of Jesus my Saviour. Amen.

A Form of Confession of Sins and Repentance.

O THOU great Judge of heaven and earth, before whose glorious Majesty even the good angels, who never sinned, fall prostrate and tremble; with what debasement and dread ought I to appear before Thy awful presence, who am but dust and ashes, and, which is infinitely worse, a miserable, wretched sinner.

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty! Thou art of purer eyes than to behold iniquity with the least approbation; the way of the wicked and his sacrifice are an abomination to Thee. Woe is me, then, O Lord, woe is me! for I have inclined unto wickedness with my whole heart; but for the sake of Thy well beloved Son, cast not out my prayer, nor turn Thy mercy from me.

Miserable wretch that I am! I have gone astray from the very womb; I was shapen in wickedness, and in sin did my mother conceive me; and I have rendered myself yet more abominable and filthy by a continual course of wickedness all the past days of my life.

Lord have mercy upon me, cleanse and forgive me; O save me for Thy mercy's sake.

Wo is me! for my whole nature is corrupt and prone to evil, and averse to all that is good; my understanding is full of ignorance and error, my will perverse, my memory tenacious of everything that may pollute me, and forgetful of my duty: my passions are inordinate, my senses the inlets of all impurity; and I feel a law in my members, continually warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin.

Lord have mercy upon me, and deliver me from the body of this death, from this tyranny of sin.

Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in Thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called Thy son: I hare violated the solemn vow I made to Thee in my baptism, by eagerly pursuing the vanities of this wicked world: easily yielding to the temptations of the devil; and by greedily indulging my own carnal desires and lusts; by a fruitless and dead faith, and by disobedience to Thy holy will and commandments.

I have sinned, O Lord God, I have sinned against Thee, by

Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in Thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called Thy son: O pity, cleanse and save me for Thy mercy's sake.

O Lord God, my known wickedness is great, and the sins I have committed are more in number than the hairs of my head; and my heart would fait me, but that I well know Thy mercies are more numberless than my sins: have mercy, therefore, upon me, according to Thy great goodness, and in the multitude of Thy mercies do away mine offences.-- O cleanse thou me also from all my secret faults, from all my sins of ignorance, infirmity, or omission. Father, forgive me, and receive me into the arms of Thy paternal compassion. Make me ashamed of my past folly and madness, my greediness in sucking in pollution: my treacherous betraying my soul to temptations; my combining with the very devils, to hasten and increase my own damnation; my obstinate refusal of Thy mercy, and unthankful abuses of Thy goodness. Make me every day more and more sensible how bitter a thing it is to depart from Thee, and to transgress Thy most holy and perfect commandments. O gracious Lord, look on me, as Thou didst on Peter; and so pierce this hard heart, that I may weep bitterly for my sins, and melt into the salutary tears of contrition.

Woe is me, that I have so grievously offended so indulgent, so liberal, so tender a Father; that I have repaid the infinite love, and intolerable sufferings of my Saviour, with nothing but those sins which occasioned His sufferings! and that I have grieved the Holy Spirit, by rejecting His good motions, whence only I derive grace and consolation!

How admirable, O Lord, are the riches of Thy goodness, who hast spared me so long, and now givest me this blessed opportunity of renewing my vows at Thy altar! O magnify yet Thy mercy, in the forgiveness of my sins; cleanse me from all the filth my soul hath contracted, which now renders me so odious to myself, as well as to Thee, by the blood of Thy beloved Son, our blessed Redeemer, Jesus Christ. Amen.

¶ Having thus acknowledged your sins, and standing up, you can in the following words declare your

I RENOUNCE, O Lord, the devil and all his works, the pomps and vanities of this wicked world, and all the sinful lusts of the flesh: henceforth I resolve to serve none but Thee, and to make it the whole concern of my life to keep Thy commandments. I am now preparing to renew my baptismal vows, which, alas! I have hitherto so often violated: I thank Thee, O heavenly Father, for the gracious opportunity, and by Thy help will keep it inviolate all the future days of my life, and live hereafter as a sworn votary to Thy love.

O my God, I dedicate myself to Thee this day: I offer Thee my senses and passions, and-all my faculties; I offer Thee all my desires, all my designs, all my studies and endeavours, all that I have or am, I offer up entirely to Thy service. Lord sanctify me wholly, that my whole spirit, soul and body, may become Thy temple: O do Thou dwell in me, and be Thou my God, and I will be Thy servant. Though I am able of myself to do nothing that is good, through Thy strength I can do all things.-- O perfect Thy strength in my weakness; let Thy Holy Spirit purify my corrupt nature, succour me in all temptations, and assist me in all my religious duties. Hold thou up my goings in Thy paths, that my footsteps slip not; give me that victorious faith that overcometh the world, and let Thy preventing and restraining grace always preserve me. To Thy keeping I commit my soul: O cover Thou me in the day of battle, against my spiritual enemies; and so conform my whole life to the example of my blessed Saviour, that at the dreadful day of judgment, I may find mercy, through His merits, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, blessed for ever. Amen.

I STEADFASTLY believe in Thee, O sweetest Jesu, Son of the Blessed; Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world: in Thy all-sufficient merit alone I trust for the remission of my sins; through the blood of Thy cross I hope for peace with God, strength against the powers of darkness, Thy grace, and the communion, of Thy Spirit here, and everlasting bliss with Thee hereafter. In Thy unfathomable grace and the unsearchable depths of Thy love, is my hope: my help standeth in Thy name, and I will not fear what man or devils can do unto me.

O my crucified Saviour, I adore and gratefully commemorate the triumphs of Thy Almighty love, in taking on Thee, for our salvation, the form of a servant; in enduring reproaches, contradictions and revilings for our sakes; and in becoming obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. By Thy stripes we are healed; by Thy death we live; Thy life-giving blood hath reconciled us to God, and Thy crown of thorns purchased for us a crown of glory. O the depth of the riches of Thy love! how unutterable is the greatness of Thy mercy! how unsearchable the measures of Thy goodness! O all ye holy angels, behold and wonder: wretched man hath sinned against God, and God himself hath suffered the sinner's punishment. O ye blessed host of heaven, adore with me, my crucified Saviour; adore and praise His unknown, inexpressible agonies, His astonishing love, and amazing condescension. O my gracious Lord, my heart is full of the sense of Thy love, in laying down Thy life for our sakes; and what have I to return to Thee, but love again! it is all that have to offer Thee; accept it, most merciful Father, imperfect as it is, and daily heighten the sense of Thy love to me. O Thou infinite Lover of souls, with all my heart I love, I praise, I adore Thy love to me; but alas! I can never do it enough here; O translate me to Thy kingdom of glory, in Thy own good time, that there I may love Thee to the utmost capacity of a created being, and praise Thee to all eternity. Amen.--Lord Jesus, Amen, Amen.

Acts of Charity.

O LORD God, I do from henceforth resolve to love my neighbour as myself; and to love him not only in word, but in deed and in truth. I do from my heart, forgive all men their trespasses; do Thou, O Lord, forgive them also. Lord, bless them that hate me, and do good to them that despitefully use me, and repay them good for evil. If I have done wrong to any man, I am ready to acknowledge my fault, and to amend it; and do Thou, O Lord, make them placable, easy to be entreated, ready to forgive; and that, being as much as lieth in me, at peace with all men, and none of my brethren having aughty against me, I may with sincere and peaceful heart, offer my gift at Thy altar, and be graciously accepted, through the merits of my blessed Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

A Form of General Intercession.

HOLY, holy, holy Lord God of hosts, I am a miserable sinner, humble acknowledge that I am altogether unworthy to offer up any petitions unto Thee; yet since Thou hast commanded us to make prayers and intercessions for all men, in obedience to thy command, and in confidence of Thy unlimited goodness, I commend to Thy mercy and divine [22/23] providence the wants and necessities of all mankind.

Lord, let is by Thy good pleasure to restore to Thy Catholic Church primitive peace and purity, and to preserve it against the gates of hell.

Particularly, O Lord God, I implore Thy mercy for this sinful nation; for the iniquity of the land is exceeding great; and we have been unthankful under Thy blessings; incorrigible under Thy judgments, and unprofitable under all the means of grace; and what can we expect from Thee, but to drink deep of the cup of Thy wrath? But, O Lord, in the midst of judgment, remember mercy: O be favourable to Thy people, and give us all grace to turn to Thee in weeping, fasting and prayer; and to put a period to our provocations, that thou mayest put a period to our punishment.

Defend, O Lord, the Church of America from all assaults of schism, heresy, or sacrilege; and bless all its bishops, priests and deacons, with apostolic graces, exemplary lives, and sound doctrine.

O let it ever be Thy good pleasure to save and defend the President of these United States; grant him peace, and endue him with all those gifts and graces which may make him a hater of all evil works, and a great promoter of Thy glory. Bless him and all his assistants and counsellors with such a measure of temporal good things, as Thou knowest to be most expedient for them, and crown them at last with eternal glory.

Grant to the Cabinet wisdom from above; to all magistrates, integrity and zeal for religion; to the [23/24] citizens and people, pious and just, peaceful and obedient hearts; and to the whole nation, healthful, fruitful, and peaceful seasons. To all Jews, Turks, Unbaptised, Atheists and Heretics, give the grace of conversion; to all wicked men and malefactors, timely repentance; to the disconsolate, comfort; to the sick, health; to those who are in pain, ease; to the afflicted, patience; to the hungry, food; to the naked, raiment; to the captive, liberty; and to the oppressed, deliverance.

Thou, who knowest the conditions, desires and wants of all men, suit Thy graces and blessings to our several necessities of soul and body; mercifully hear all our supplications: and those things which, for our unworthiness, we dare not, and for our blindness, we cannot ask, vouchsafe to give us, for the worthiness of Thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

BLESSED Lord Jesus! I even tremble when I consider that he who eateth and drinketh unworthily increases his own guilt; and this makes me afraid to come to Thy altar. But when I consider that Thy sentence is as severe against those, who, being invited, refuse to come, (for Thou hast said, they shall not taste of Thy supper),--I am then afraid to keep away.

But blessed be Thy mercy, O Lord; for in this perplexity Thou art my guide; Thou, by giving me this opportunity of receiving, invitest me to Thy table; Thou callest me to seek Thy face, and my heart replies, Thy face, Lord, will I seek!

If Thou, Lord, shouldest be extreme to mark what is done amiss; alas! I am then unfit, not only to communicate, but to say even my daily prayer.

I know, Lord, that if I should stay till I am worthy to come, I should then never come; and therefore, though I am unworthy of so unspeakable a-mercy, yet I come to beg Thy grace to make me worthy, or at least such a person as Thou wilt accept.

O blessed Jesus, do Thou so open my eye of faith, to discern Thy Body and Blood in this holy sacrament; do Thou so dispose me at this time, that I may feel all the happy effects of Thy Divine institution; that my soul may receive such lasting impressions of Thy goodness, and be so filled with Thee and with the incomparable delights of Thy service, and with such an early foretaste of heaven, that all the pleasures of sin, which may tempt me, may appear tasteless and unwelcome.

O heavenly Father, clothe me with the wedding garment, even the graces of my blessed Saviour, for then am I sure to be a welcome guest at Thy table, when I shall go thither in the likeness of Thy own well-beloved Son.

O heavenly Father, fill me with a lively faith, profound humility, filial obedience, pure affection and universal charity: O raise in my soul all that zeal and devotion, that love and desire, that joy and delight, that praise and thanksgiving, which become the remembrance of a crucified Saviour, which become one redeemed by the blood of Christ; and that for His sake only that redeemed me, in whose holy words I sum up all the graces and blessings of which I stand in need.

O GRACIOUS and merciful God! Father, Son and Holy Ghost! look down from heaven, the throne of Thy eternal glory, upon me Thy unworthy servant, with the eyes of mercy and compassion. O Lord, my God, I disclaim all merit; I renounce all righteousness of my own; and I fly for refuge, for pardon and sanctification, to the righteousness of Jesus, Thy Anointed. For Thy tender mercies' sake, for the sake of Thy blessed Jesus, the Son of Thy love, in whom Thou art ever well pleased, have mercy upon me; receive my prayers; pardon my infirmities: strengthen my weak resolutions; guide my steps to Thy holy altar, and there feed me with the meat that perisheth not, but endureth to everlasting life. Amen.

O MY Lord and my God! may I receive this sacred symbol of Thy crucified Body, in remembrance of the sacrifice of the cross, trusting alone in Thy infinite merits. By the power of Thy grace, may I be delivered from condemnation and death.

ALMIGHTY is Thy power; infinite Thy mercy, O blessed Jesus! Be it unto Thy servant according to Thy word. O let Thy Body nourish and strengthen me unto everlasting life. Glory be unto Thee Holy Jesus I the author and finisher of my salvation.

I WILL receive the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the Lord. I will ratify my vows with this Blood of the everlasting covenant, and devote myself forever to Thy service, O my God.--Saviour of the world, evermore help and defend me.

GLORY be to Thee, O Jesus, my Lord, and my God, for thus feeding my soul with Thy most blessed body and blood; O let Thy heavenly food infuse new life and new vigour into my soul, and into the souls of all who communicate with me, that we may all grow more contrite for our sins, and that we may all love Thee, and serve Thee, and delight in Thee, and praise Thee more than we have heretofore done. Amen, Amen.

BLESSED Jesus! relying on Thy mercy, I have bowed myself at Thy table, to receive the precious pledges of Thy dying love. O may Thy presence go with me from Thy holy altar, that when I return to the necessary labours and duties of the world, I may be enabled, by Thy grace, to obey Thy commandments, and to rejoice in the smiles of Thy love. Guided by Thy mercy through all the danger and trials of my pilgrimage, may I depart out of the world in peace, in a steadfast reliance on Thy merits, in the joyful hope of the fruition of the glories, of Thy kingdom, blessed Jesus, to whom, with the Father and the Holy Ghost I render all the praise of my redemption. Amen.

I BLESS Thee, O God, for the spiritual nourishment with which Thou hast strengthened and refreshed my soul. I bless Thee, that through the crucified Body and Blood of Thy Son, I am restored to Thy favour. Pardon the many imperfections of my services; and grant me grace to fulfill the sacred vows of love and obedience which I have made to Thee, my God and Father, through Jesus Christ my Redeemer. Amen.

O LORD, pardon the imperfections both in my prayers and praises, and incline me not only to hear Thy word, but to obey the same, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

¶ When the service is over, you should go to your home as quietly and thoughtfully as possible, and when your have gone to your room, offer up the following

O HOW plentiful is Thy goodness, O Lord, which Thou hast laid up for those fear Thee and put their trust in Thy mercy!

Thou hast not only died for us on the cross, but hast united Thyself to us in the holy Sacrament, and become the very food, the life, the strength, the support of our souls.

What thanks, gracious Lord, can I return to Thee for that love which Thou hast showed me, a wretched sinner?

O Lord, raise my devotion to the highest pitch, to praise Thee; enlarge my soul to love Thee!

How can I ever more offend Thee, O crucified Saviour! and yet, whilst I carry this body of sin about me, I fear I shall. But, O Lord, I do from my heart renounce and abhor all things that displease Thee, I resolve to the utmost of my power to resist all temptations, and to become as totally Thine as my frail nature will permit.

O gracious Lord, who hast so infinitely loved us, and given us everlasting consolation, and good hope through grace, comfort my heart, and forever establish it in every good word and work; grant that I may never pollute my soul, which Thou hast now consecrated to be Thy temple.

Blessing and honour, and glory and power, be unto Him that sitteth on the throne, and to the Lamb for ever!

I will love thee, O Lord my King, and I will praise Thy name for ever and ever.

Praise the Lord, O my soul; while I live will I praise the Lord; as long as I have any being I will sing praises unto Thee, O blessed Saviour, my King and my God. Amen, Amen,

O GOOD Saviour, I will, through Thy grace, do this in remembrance of Thee, and in obedience to Thy command, as well as I am able.

I do therefore, this good day, join in desire and spirit, with every Christian congregation in the world, which truly celebrates this holy mystery.

With them I join in giving my devoutest thanks to Thy Almighty Father and our gracious God, who did not overlook lost mankind, but sent Thee, His only Son, to redeem us.

With them I call to remembrance what Thou hast done and suffered for us; Thine incarnation; Thy laborious life; Thy bitter passion; Thy death and resurrection: the great deliverance Thou hast thereby wrought for all mankind; and the obligations Thou hast laid upon us.

I acknowledge and receive Thee, O Jesus, as our Heavenly Teacher; as our example and pattern; as our only Mediator and Advocate with God; and as the Sovereign Judge of all mankind.

With Thy Church I join in pleading the merits of Thy all-sufficient sacrifice with Thy Eternal Father: I rely upon that sacrifice for the pardon of all my sins; for the assistance of the divine grace; for deliverance from the corruption of my own nature, and from the malice and snares of the devil; for the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, and for a blessed resurrection: the Lord Almighty, for Thy sake, being reconciled unto me.

I devote my spirit, soul, and body to Thee and to Thy service, beseeching Thee to give me grace, never wilfully to depart from Thy laws.

I join with Thy Church, and plead the merits of Thy sacrifice, for all estates and conditions of men; that none may deprive themselves of the happiness which Thou hast purchased by Thy death.

For all Christian rulers; for all Bishops and Pastors, that they may preserve the sacred rites committed to their trust:

For all that strive to propagate Thy Gospel; for a primitive zeal in all that fear Thy Name; for all that sit in darkness, are in error, or are destitute of the necessary means of instruction; for all that sincerely seek the truth; for all sinners, that they may have grace and strength to break their bonds:

For all that are in adversity; for all that suffer wrongfully, or that are deprived of their just rights; for all that are in pain of body, or anguish of mind and spirit; for all that are tempted, or in danger of falling into despair; for all that are in slavery, under persecution, in prison, or in poverty; for all persons and places in distress by the sword, pestilence, and famine:

For all that are in their last sickness, that they may omit nothing that is necessary to make their peace with God:

For all widows and fatherless children; for all that call upon God, and have none else to help them:

For this land and this Church, that the Lord may avert the judgments which we justly deserve:

For our friends, our relations, our benefactors, and our enemies; for all that have desired our prayers, and for the mystical Body of Christ:

Beseeching the Almighty God, the Creator and Redeemer of all, to have mercy upon all whom He has made and redeemed, and to give unto all grace and help, according to the necessities they labour under, for Thy sake, O Lord Jesus, to whom, with the Father and the Holy Ghost, be, all honour and glory, dominion and power, for ever and ever, Amen.
